Springfield Police Division Lt. Randall Ballentine said police had received reports around 1:48 a.m. Wednesday of multiple gunshots in the 1900 block of South Yellow Springs Street.
Police received more reports that multiple people had been shot while emergency crews were on the way, Ballentine said.
DeWine spoke about the shooting during a video conference before signing a bill that would provide assistance to schools and other organizations due the coronavirus pandemic, Dayton Daily News reported.
The governor said two people are in police custody, but there has been no confirmation from Springfield police. No further information about the suspects has been released at this time.
Police said the victims had gathered for a celebration in remembrance of an unknown individual who had passed away years ago when the gunfire broke out, Dayton Daily News reported.
Upon arrival at the scene “officers found multiple individuals shot,” according to Ballentine.
Five of the people injured during the shooting were transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center and are expected to be treated and released, Springfield police said. There is currently no update on the condition of the sixth victim, who was transported to Miami Valley Hospital by CareFlight.
Following the shooting, Springfield Regional Medical Center was placed on a brief lockdown. Springfield police told NBC affiliate WDTN it was standard procedure and the lockdown has since been lifted.
No victim information has been provided at this time.

Springfield police were assisted by Ohio State Highway Patrol at the scene and hospital, and investigators from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation were also at the scene of the shooting on Wednesday morning, Dayton Daily News reported.
Ballentine said he is not sure what type of weapon was used, how many shots were fired, or what led to the violence, FOX 19 reported.
The incident is one of the latest in the more than 240 mass shootings that have occurred this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
