According to a press release from the National Guard, more than 4,800 members of the Louisiana National Guard have been deployed “to protect lives and property, maintain communications and ensure continuity of operations and government.”

“Louisiana Guard members are working with local officials in three parishes and helping distribute meals ready to eat, water, tarps and ice from the Federal Emergency Management Agency,” the press release said. “A total of 5,009 National Guard troops were in Louisiana Monday.”

Several other states have also deployed their National Guard to assist with relief efforts, including Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri.

More than 320 members of the Tennessee Army National Guard traveled to Louisiana on Monday “to assist with relief and recovery operations,” according to the press release.

Additionally, approximately 200 Oklahoma National Guardsmen will travel to Louisiana on Wednesday to “assist with route clearance, security, levee reinforcement and general support.”

“This is what the National Guard is for,” Colonel Bob Walter, commander of the Oklahoma National Guard Joint Task Force said. “Our organization is proud to help our neighbors in need, just as we did for both Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Harvey, and just as other states have done for us.”

On Tuesday, Missouri Governor Mike Parson announced that the state will send 300 National Guardsmen to Louisiana to assist with recovery efforts following Hurricane Ida.

“As our fellow states never fail to come to our aid in times of need, we are proud to answer this call to provide relief to our friends in Louisiana,” Parson said in a statement. “Americans helping Americans and neighbor helping neighbor is what keeps our nation strong. Our professionals in the Missouri National Guard are the best of the best and have the resources, skills, and training necessary to help Louisiana recover and come back stronger than ever.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also recently announced that the state will send aid to Louisiana.

“We’ve deployed and staged Urban Search and Rescue Task Forces 1 & 2 in Mississippi. USAR Task Force 4 and 50 @FLGuard are mobilizing to Louisiana,” DeSantis wrote in a tweet.

The press release from the National Guard also notes that the South Carolina National Guard was “preparing to assist Louisiana with personnel and equipment in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida.”

On Sunday, Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana as a Category 4 storm, causing widespread damage across the state.
