57 Percent Of Americans Say Another Event Like Jan. 6 Likely In Next Few Years

Fifty-seven percent said they think “something similar” to the Capital riot will happen again in the next few years, according to the Axios-Momentive poll. Twenty-three percent said they think it is “very likely” such an event will happen again soon, while 34 percent said it is “somewhat likely” to occur.

Thirty-seven percent said such an event occurring again in the next few years is either “not so likely” or “not likely at all.”

Democrats were more likely to say an event similar to the riot could happen again within the coming years. Seventy percent of those who identified as Democrats said something like the January assault is likely to happen again, compared with 47 percent of Republicans.

The survey, released on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the insurrection, also found many Americans have lost faith in the nation’s democracy. Thirty-seven percent of respondents said they’ve lost faith in American democracy, while 49 percent said they still have faith in democracy. Ten percent said they have never had faith in American democracy.

About two-thirds (63 percent) said they think the events of January 6 had at least temporarily changed the way Americans think about the country’s democratic government. About a third (33 percent) of respondents said those changed feelings were temporary, while 31 percent said the changes are permanent.

Democrats were more likely than Republicans to say the riots changed American sentiment toward the government, by an 81 to 52 percent margin.

A majority (58) of respondents also said they support the work of the House select committee investigating the insurrection. Democrats (88 percent) were far more likely to support the committee than Republicans (32 percent).

Just a small majority (55 percent) of respondents said they accept that President Joe Biden legitimately won the 2020 presidential election, while 26 percent said they do not accept him as the legitimate winner, and 16 percent said they are not sure. In a similar poll last year, 58 percent said Biden legitimately won the election.

Americans are somewhat united on agreeing about their divisions. More than half (53 percent) said that “America is more divided today than ever before, and these divisions are likely to continue far into the future.” Meanwhile, 28 percent said that America is more divided than ever but that Americans will soon come back together.
