Currently, the men’s division in Vince McMahon’s company has two top titles on the main roster: the WWE Championship and Universal Championship.

If the champion loses their title, they have a rematch clause that allows them to challenge the new champion for a title match.

While some get their rematch almost immediately, others have to wait a lot longer. Superstars like Kevin Owens and Finn Balor have had to wait years for a shot at their lost Universal title. Similarly, Goldberg returned after almost two years for a rematch for the Universal Championship.

However, there have also been a few instances when superstars have been denied a rematch altogether.

Our list will focus on five such superstars who didn’t get their world title rematch in the modern era. Which of the following names do you want to have their rematch? Share with us in the comments.

#5. The Rock

The Rock returned to WWE in 2011 and targeted John Cena. The two superstars had a back-and-forth battle for a couple of years. Their skirmish came to an end at WrestleMania XXIX.

The Great One defeated the then WWE Champion CM Punk at Royal Rumble 2013. In the eponymous match of the same event, Cena emerged the victor and chose The Rock as his competitor for WrestleMania.

Their twice-in-a-lifetime match at The Showcase of Immortals was a decent fight that ended in Cena’s favor. The two titans showed mutual respect after the event, which ensured that The Rock will never challenge Cena for the WWE title.

However, The Brahma Bull could never challenge any other future world champions as well due to his Hollywood obligations. The only match he contested after the aforesaid bout was at WrestleMania 32 against Erick Rowan.

#4. Triple H lost his WWE Championship and never challenged again

Royal Rumble 2016 was different from the others as the WWE Championship was on the line in the free-for-all. Triple H entered the Rumble at #30 and won the championship.

The Cerebral Assassin defended his title against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 32. It was an intense brawl between the two, which also included an unintentional spear to Stephanie McMahon.

It was Reigns who stood tall in the match. Though The Game contested some matches after this fight, he never challenged for a world championship again.

#3. Edge never got a chance to reclaim his prestigious Big Gold Belt

Edge was the ultimate WWE World Heavyweight Champion. He won the championship seven times, more than anyone else.

The last time The Rated-R Superstar held the title was in 2011. He defended the title against Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania that year and stood tall in the clash.

However, he relinquished the title the following SmackDown due to being diagnosed with spinal stenosis. While Finn Balor also had to vacate his title due to a legit injury, he was given a rematch after his return.

Such a rematch was not feasible in Edge’s case as he returned to WWE in 2020. Unfortunately, the World Heavyweight Championship was retired back in 2013.

#2. The Fiend never challenged Roman Reigns for the Universal title

When The Fiend made his WWE debut, a decorated future was anticipated for him. He proved it right when he won the Universal title, not once, but twice.

He defended the title against Braun Strowman and Roman Reigns at Payback 2020. Reigns stood tall in the event by pinning Braun Strowman.

While it was believed that this was done for a greater match between The Tribal Chief and The Fiend, the two never crossed paths again. Moreover, Wyatt was released from WWE after his feud with Randy Orton came to an end.

#1. Big E is yet to receive a rematch for his championship

Big E started 2022 as the WWE Champion. He defended his title in a fatal five-way match against Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, Bobby Lashley, and Brock Lesnar at Day 1.

The Beast Incarnate won the match, and Big E hasn’t yet been given a rematch for the title. Lesnar subsequently lost the WWE title to Bobby Lashley at Royal Rumble 2022 due to interference by Roman Reigns.

Only time will tell if Big E will ever get his rematch, especially when he’s not entering The Elimination Chamber, where Lashley will defend his title against Brock Lesnar, Seth Rollins, Austin Theory, Riddle, and AJ Styles. The premium live event will take place on February 19, 2022, at the Jeddah Super Dome in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
